Katz Index of Independence in Activities of Daily Living
The Katz Index of Independence in Activities of Daily Living is a tool used to assess a person's ability to perform basic daily tasks independently. It evaluates six activities: bathing, dressing, toileting, transferring (moving from one place to another), continence, and feeding. For each activity, a person is rated as either independent or dependent. The results help healthcare providers understand the level of assistance an individual may need in daily life and are useful in planning care, especially for the elderly or those with disabilities. This assessment supports better decision-making regarding care and support services.
