Joseph Mobutu

Joseph Mobutu, also known as Mobutu Sese Seko, was a Congolese politician and military officer who ruled the Democratic Republic of the Congo (formerly Zaire) from 1965 to 1997. He came to power after a coup and established an authoritarian regime marked by extreme corruption, oppression, and human rights abuses. Mobutu promoted a policy of "Authenticity," encouraging a return to African traditions, which included changing place names and adopting African dress. He amassed considerable wealth while his country suffered economic decline. His rule ended when he was ousted during a civil war, leading to the country's turbulent transition.
