The Jomon people were an ancient group of hunter-gatherers who lived in Japan from around 14,000 BCE to 300 BCE. They are known for their unique pottery, which features intricate designs and is among the oldest in the world. The name "Jomon" means "cord-marked" in Japanese, referring to the patterns on their pottery made by pressing cords into the clay. Jomon society relied on fishing, hunting, and gathering, developing a rich culture with diverse tools and crafts.
