Ancient Japan

Ancient Japan refers to the period before modern times, roughly from the Jomon era (around 14,000 BCE) through the Heian period (794-1185 CE). It was characterized by the development of unique culture, religion (Shinto and Buddhism), and social hierarchy. Early societies relied on hunting, fishing, and farming, creating distinctive pottery and tools. Over time, imperial courts and aristocracy flourished, influencing art, literature, and governance. Japan remained relatively isolated geographically, which helped preserve its traditions. This era laid the foundation for Japan’s later cultural and political development, shaping the nation’s identity and heritage.
