John Harvard

John Harvard (1607-1638) was an English clergyman and the first benefactor of Harvard University, the oldest institution of higher education in the United States. After his death from tuberculosis, Harvard bequeathed his estate and his collection of books to the newly established college in Cambridge, Massachusetts. In his honor, the college was renamed Harvard College in 1639. Harvard is now renowned for its academic excellence and has produced numerous influential leaders and scholars.
