Jizya

Jizya is a tax historically levied in some Islamic states on non-Muslims, particularly in the context of a Muslim-majority society. It was imposed as a form of protection tax, allowing non-Muslims—such as Christians and Jews—to practice their own religions and receive state protection. In return for paying this tax, non-Muslims were often exempt from military service and some other obligations that were required of Muslim citizens. The practice has varied historically, with different interpretations and implementations across time and regions. Today, it is mostly a historical concept, not widely practiced in modern Muslim-majority countries.
