Janus kinases
Janus kinases (JAKs) are enzymes inside cells that play a crucial role in transmitting signals from certain molecules called cytokines outside the cell to the cell’s nucleus. This process influences cell growth, development, and immune responses. When cytokines bind to receptors on the cell surface, JAKs become activated, triggering a chain reaction that results in gene expression changes. Proper JAK function is essential for healthy immune function, but when they malfunction or are overactive, it can lead to autoimmune diseases or other health issues. JAK inhibitors are drugs designed to modulate this activity for therapeutic purposes.
