Janjaweed
The Janjaweed are a militia group in Sudan, primarily known for their role in the Darfur conflict that began in the early 2000s. Composed mainly of ethnic Arab members, they were reportedly supported by the Sudanese government to combat non-Arab rebel groups. The Janjaweed became infamous for committing widespread atrocities, including killings, rapes, and the destruction of villages, leading to accusations of ethnic cleansing. Their actions contributed to a humanitarian crisis, displacing millions and prompting international condemnation and calls for justice. The term "Janjaweed" itself translates to "devils on horseback."
