Irish Republican Brotherhood
The Irish Republican Brotherhood (IRB) was an secret organization founded in 1858 dedicated to ending British rule in Ireland and establishing an independent Irish republic. It aimed to achieve this through clandestine activities, including planning uprisings and fostering nationalist sentiment among Irish Catholics and Protestants. The IRB played a central role in the 1916 Easter Rising, which, despite its initial failure, galvanized support for Irish independence. As a revolutionary group, it operated covertly for much of its existence, influencing Ireland’s path toward independence in the early 20th century.
