Invasion of Japan
The Invasion of Japan refers to the Allied plans to invade Japan towards the end of World War II, which were never executed due to Japan's surrender following the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945. The invasion, known as Operation Downfall, would have involved large-scale military operations aimed at capturing the Japanese home islands. It was expected to be extremely costly in terms of lives on both sides. Ultimately, Japan's surrender on August 15, 1945, after the bombings, made the invasion unnecessary and marked the end of the war.
