International Permafrost Association

The International Permafrost Association (IPA) is a global organization that brings together scientists and researchers studying permafrost—ground that remains frozen for at least two consecutive years. Its goal is to facilitate international collaboration, share knowledge, and promote understanding of permafrost's role in Earth's climate, ecosystems, and infrastructure. Permafrost is important because it stores large amounts of greenhouse gases and influences landscapes and communities, especially in Arctic and sub-Arctic regions. The IPA helps coordinate research efforts, provide data, and raise awareness about how thawing permafrost affects our planet.
