Immigration and Naturalization Service

The Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) was a former agency of the U.S. Department of Justice responsible for handling immigration processes, including visa applications, green cards, and citizenship. Established in 1933, it oversaw the entry and legal status of immigrants in the U.S. In 2003, the INS was abolished and its functions were reorganized under the Department of Homeland Security, creating agencies like U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). These new agencies continue to manage immigration and naturalization processes, ensuring legal compliance and safety in the U.S. immigration system.
