Finland's history began with its settlement around 8500 BC. It was influenced by Sweden and Russia over centuries, becoming part of the Kingdom of Sweden in the 12th century. In 1809, Finland was ceded to Russia, becoming the autonomous Grand Duchy of Finland. Seeking independence, Finland declared itself independent in 1917, following the turmoil of World War I. The country experienced a civil war in 1918 between 'Reds' and 'Whites,' leading to a republican government. Finland fought in World War II, maintaining its independence. Since then, it has developed into a stable, democratic nation known for its high quality of life.
