Hemoglobin-based oxygen carriers in critical care
Hemoglobin-based oxygen carriers (HBOCs) are artificial products used in critical care to transport oxygen in the bloodstream, mimicking the function of natural hemoglobin found in red blood cells. These carriers are developed to help patients who may not have enough red blood cells, such as those in trauma or surgery. HBOCs can improve oxygen delivery to tissues, potentially stabilizing patients' conditions until they recover or obtain blood transfusions. They are a promising option, particularly in situations where donor blood is scarce or not an option, but their use and effectiveness are still under research.
