handcart companies
Handcart companies were groups formed by Mormon pioneers in the 19th century to travel to the Salt Lake Valley. Instead of using traditional covered wagons, these groups pulled handcarts—simple, wheeled carts that carried their belongings. This method was adopted to save money and allow more settlers to join the migration. The journey, often difficult and treacherous, took place between 1856 and 1860, with notable companies like the Willy and Martin handcart companies experiencing severe hardships. Many individuals endured harsh weather and limited supplies, but their efforts contributed significantly to the establishment of the Mormon community in the West.
