Grand Army of the Republic

The Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) was a fraternal organization founded in 1866 for Union veterans of the American Civil War. It aimed to provide support, camaraderie, and advocacy for former soldiers, as well as promote patriotism and the values of the Union. The GAR played a significant role in influencing post-war politics, including memorializing fallen soldiers and supporting veterans’ benefits. It also helped establish Memorial Day. The organization gradually declined in membership over the years until its last charter was revoked in the 1950s, but its legacy continues in how we honor veterans today.
