Grand Army of the Republic (GAR)
The Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) was a fraternal organization founded in 1866 by Union veterans of the American Civil War. It served as a social and political network, providing mutual aid, commemorating fallen comrades, and advocating for veterans' rights. The GAR influenced public policy, such as establishing Memorial Day as a national remembrance. It was highly organized, with local posts across the United States, and played a significant role in shaping post-war American society and veteran affairs until it disbanded in 1956 as its members aged and passed away.
