Golden Goal
The Golden Goal was a rule used in soccer (football) during knockout competitions, introduced in the late 1990s. It stated that if a match was tied after regular time, the game would continue into extra time, and the first team to score a goal would immediately win. This rule aimed to encourage attacking play and create more excitement. However, it faced criticism for its unpredictability and the pressure it placed on players. The Golden Goal rule was abolished in 2004, and now, extra time is played in full, followed by a penalty shootout if necessary.
