Giovanni di Lorenzo de' Medici (Pope Leo X)

Giovanni di Lorenzo de' Medici, known as Pope Leo X, was pope from 1513 to 1521. Born into the powerful Medici family in Florence, he was a patron of the arts and played a significant role in the Renaissance, supporting artists like Raphael and Michelangelo. His papacy is often criticized for its lavish spending and indulgence, contributing to the corruption perceived within the Church, which sparked the Reformation. Leo X is famously remembered for the sale of indulgences, a practice that led to Martin Luther's protest and the subsequent split in the Church. He died in 1521.
