Genuine Progress Indicator
The Genuine Progress Indicator (GPI) is a holistic measure of a country's economic and social well-being, designed to provide a clearer picture of progress than traditional economic indicators like Gross Domestic Product (GDP). While GDP only counts financial transactions, GPI accounts for factors such as environmental health, income inequality, and social welfare. It adds positive contributions, like volunteer work, and subtracts negatives, such as pollution or crime. Essentially, GPI aims to reflect the true quality of life and sustainability in a society, helping policymakers make more informed decisions for overall progress.
