GDR cultural policy

The GDR (German Democratic Republic), or East Germany, had a distinct cultural policy focused on promoting socialist values. Art, literature, and music were used to reflect the state's ideology and to cultivate a sense of national identity. While the government supported artists aligned with its goals, it also heavily censored and controlled creative expression. This meant that works promoting capitalism or dissent were often suppressed, while those that celebrated socialist themes were encouraged. The aim was to construct a unified culture that reinforced the GDR's political objectives and fostered loyalty among its citizens.
