The People's Chamber

The People’s Chamber was the name of East Germany’s parliament, serving as its primary legislative body from 1949 to 1990. It was responsible for making laws, approving government decisions, and representing the citizens’ interests within the socialist government framework. Members were mostly elected through a controlled process within a single-party system dominated by the Socialist Unity Party. The chamber often approved governmental proposals with little debate, reflecting the centralized authority of the ruling party. It played a key role in the governance of East Germany until reunification with West Germany, after which it was replaced by the Bundestag in the unified country.
