Fragile X-associated tremor/ataxia syndrome

Fragile X-associated tremor/ataxia syndrome (FXTAS) is an inherited neurological condition affecting some older males and, less commonly, females. It is caused by a genetic change in the FMR1 gene, leading to the production of abnormal RNA that damages brain cells. Symptoms typically include intention tremors (shaking during movement), balance problems (ataxia), memory issues, and cognitive decline. FXTAS usually develops later in life, often around age 50 or older. Its progression varies, but it can significantly impact daily functioning. The condition is linked to the fragile X gene, which is also associated with fragile X syndrome, a common inherited cause of intellectual disability.
