Fragile X-associated tremor/ataxia syndrome (FXTAS)
Fragile X-associated tremor/ataxia syndrome (FXTAS) is a neurological condition that primarily affects older men, particularly those with a family history of Fragile X syndrome. It involves progressive tremors and balance problems (ataxia), often leading to difficulties with movement and coordination. FXTAS is caused by an abnormal repetition of DNA sequences in a gene, which can disrupt normal brain function. Symptoms typically appear in mid-life or later and may be accompanied by cognitive changes. While there is no cure, management focuses on alleviating symptoms and improving quality of life for those affected.
