Fort Monroe

Fort Monroe is a historic coastal fortress located in Virginia, built in the early 1800s to defend the Chesapeake Bay area. Known as the "Gibraltar of the Chesapeake," it features massive brick walls and a strategic position on the waterfront. Over the years, it served various military purposes, including as a Union stronghold during the Civil War and later as a site for military housing and training. In 2011, it was declared surplus by the government and is now being transformed into a public park and historic site, offering educational opportunities, recreation, and a glimpse into American military history.
