Esteban Echeverría was an influential Argentine writer and political thinker active in the early to mid-19th century. He is best known for his role in the romantic literary movement in Latin America and for his advocacy of individual freedom and social justice. Echeverría's most famous work, "El matadero" (The Slaughterhouse), is a critique of the dictatorship of Juan Manuel de Rosas and reflects the struggles between civilization and barbarism in Argentina.
