Equal Temperament

Equal temperament is a musical tuning system where the octave is divided into 12 equal parts, called semitones. This means that each note is spaced evenly, allowing instruments to play in any key without needing to retune. It provides a consistent sound across different keys, making it easier for composers and performers to collaborate and create music. Most Western music, especially since the 18th century, uses equal temperament, enabling a wide variety of harmonies and facilitating the use of instruments like the piano, which can easily play in diverse musical styles.
