epiretinal implant
An epiretinal implant is a medical device designed to help people with severe vision loss, often due to conditions like retinitis pigmentosa or age-related macular degeneration. It consists of a small electronic chip placed on the surface of the retina, the light-sensitive layer at the back of the eye. The chip receives signals from a camera (often mounted on glasses) and converts them into electrical impulses. These impulses stimulate the remaining healthy retinal cells, allowing patients to perceive patterns of light and movement, ultimately improving their ability to see and navigate their environment.
