Endoscopic Mucosal Resection
Endoscopic Mucosal Resection (EMR) is a minimally invasive medical procedure used to remove early-stage or superficial abnormal tissue, such as precancerous or cancerous growths, from the digestive tract—usually the esophagus, stomach, or colon. During EMR, a specialized endoscope (a flexible tube with a camera) is inserted through the mouth or anus to visualize the area. Once the abnormal tissue is identified, a solution may be injected beneath it to lift it away from deeper layers. The lesion is then carefully cut away with special instruments. EMR allows for diagnosis, treatment, and often curative removal without major surgery.
