Ehrenfest Classification
The Ehrenfest classification is a way scientists categorize phase transitions — when a material changes from one state, like solid, liquid, or gas. It divides these changes into two types based on how certain properties, like entropy or volume, change at the transition. First-order transitions involve abrupt changes in these properties, such as water boiling into steam. Second-order transitions are more gradual, with properties changing smoothly but their rates changing suddenly. This classification helps scientists understand the nature of the transition and predict material behavior under different conditions.
