Eastern Box Turtle
The Eastern Box Turtle is a small, terrestrial turtle native to the eastern United States. It has a dome-shaped shell that can be brown or olive with bright yellow or orange markings. Unlike many turtles, it can completely close its shell to protect itself from predators. Eastern Box Turtles prefer wooded areas and wetlands, often basking in the sun. They are omnivorous, feeding on plants, insects, and small animals. Known for their longevity, they can live for over 50 years. Unfortunately, habitat loss and human activities have led to declining populations, making conservation important for their survival.
