Terrapene carolina
Terrapene carolina, commonly known as the Eastern box turtle, is a small, terrestrial turtle native to the eastern United States. It has a domed, hinged shell that can close tightly to protect itself from predators. The shell's coloration varies but often includes a mix of yellow, orange, and brown patterns. Eastern box turtles are omnivores, feeding on insects, fruits, and plants. They prefer moist, woodlands and meadows, and play a vital role in their ecosystems by helping control insect populations and dispersing seeds. These turtles are territorial and can live for several decades in the wild.
