E. coli O157:H7
E. coli O157:H7 is a harmful strain of the bacteria Escherichia coli that can cause severe stomach cramps, diarrhea (sometimes bloody), and vomiting. In some cases, it leads to a serious complication called hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), which can cause kidney failure, especially in children and the elderly. The bacteria are often spread through contaminated food, such as undercooked beef, unpasteurized milk, or contaminated vegetables and water. Good food handling, thorough cooking, and proper hygiene are essential to prevent infection. Most people recover fully, but some cases require medical attention.
