Dorr Rebellion
The Dorr Rebellion was a political uprising in Rhode Island during 1841-1842, led by Thomas Dorr. It emerged from frustrations over a restrictive voting system that disenfranchised many white males. Dorr and his supporters sought to create a new constitution that would expand voting rights. The rebellion escalated when Dorr declared a rival government, leading to armed conflict. Although the uprising was ultimately suppressed, it highlighted issues of democracy and voting rights, contributing to reforms in Rhode Island, including broader suffrage for men. The Dorr Rebellion is often regarded as an early example of a fight for democratic principles in America.
