Diphtheria
Diphtheria is a serious bacterial infection caused by *Corynebacterium diphtheriae*. It primarily affects the throat and nose, leading to a sore throat, fever, and weakness. One of its hallmark symptoms is a thick gray or white membrane in the throat that can obstruct breathing. The bacteria produce toxins that can damage tissues and affect organs, making prompt treatment essential. Diphtheria spreads through respiratory droplets and direct contact with infected sores. Vaccination is the best prevention. If untreated, it can lead to severe complications, but it is generally manageable with antibiotics and antitoxins.
