Davidsonian semantics
Davidsonian semantics, developed by philosopher Donald Davidson, views meaning in language as closely tied to our understanding of events and the relations between them. Instead of focusing solely on words or sentences, it emphasizes how language reflects our knowledge of the world, particularly through actions and experiences. For instance, to understand a sentence like "She runs," we consider the event of running and how it connects to the person and their context. This perspective highlights that meaning is deeply interconnected with our general knowledge about events, actions, and the roles that entities play within them.
