Data Protection Directive

The Data Protection Directive, formally known as Directive 95/46/EC, was a European Union law aimed at protecting individuals' personal information. It established rules for how organizations should collect, use, and store personal data, ensuring people have rights over their information, such as access and the ability to request deletions. The directive set standards for privacy and security, promoting transparency in how data is handled. It was replaced by the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) in 2018, which strengthened these protections and aimed for greater consistency across EU member states.
