Cytomegalovirus (CMV)

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is a common virus related to the herpes family. Most people infected with CMV experience no symptoms or mild illness, but it remains in the body for life in a dormant state. If the immune system becomes weakened, such as during pregnancy or illness, CMV can reactivate and cause health issues. It can also be passed from mother to baby during pregnancy, potentially leading to birth defects. CMV spreads through bodily fluids like blood, saliva, urine, and breast milk. While generally harmless in healthy individuals, it can pose risks to pregnant women and immunocompromised people.
