Col. Thomas W. Higginson

Colonel Thomas W. Higginson was an American soldier, educator, and abolitionist, born in 1823. He is best known for leading the first African American regiment during the Civil War, the 1st South Carolina Volunteers. Higginson was a strong advocate for the rights of Black individuals and believed in their capability to fight for freedom. After the war, he also contributed to literature and social reform. His efforts helped change public perceptions about Black soldiers and their roles in American society, paving the way for future advancements in civil rights. He passed away in 1911.
