Charles the Bold

Charles the Bold (1433–1477) was the last Duke of Burgundy from the Valois line and a key figure in late medieval European politics. He sought to expand his territory and power, aiming to create a powerful Burgundian state in what is now modern-day France and Belgium. Known for his ambitious military campaigns, Charles fought against both France and various Swiss Confederation cities. His reign ended after his defeat at the Battle of Nancy, where he was killed. His death destabilized Burgundy and marked the decline of the Burgundian Netherlands, leading to greater centralization in France and Habsburg dominance in the region.
