Charlemagne, also known as Charles the Great, was a king of the Franks who reigned from 768 to 814 AD and became the first Holy Roman Emperor in 800 AD. He united much of Western Europe under his rule, promoting the Carolingian Renaissance, which revived art, culture, and learning. Charlemagne is credited with laying the foundations for modern European states and spreading Christianity. His empire was notable for its administrative reforms and support of education, helping to shape the future of Europe during the Middle Ages. He is often regarded as one of history's greatest monarchs.
