Caroline Norton

Caroline Norton (1808–1877) was a British social reformer, writer, and early feminist. She became prominent in the 19th century for her advocacy around women's rights, particularly concerning matrimonial laws that disadvantaged married women. After her tumultuous marriage to a violent husband, she fought for legal reforms that would grant women greater rights over their children and property. Norton's work significantly influenced the Married Women’s Property Act of 1882, which allowed women to own and control their property. Her writings and activism contributed to the early women's rights movement in Britain, making her a key figure in advocating for social change.
