British Auxiliary Territorial Service

The British Auxiliary Territorial Service (ATS) was a women's branch of the British Army formed during World War II in 1938. Its purpose was to allow women to serve in non-combat roles, freeing men for front-line duty. Members of the ATS worked in various capacities, such as driving vehicles, operating communications, and providing administrative support. The ATS played a crucial role in maintaining military efficiency during the war, and it was a pioneer in advancing women’s participation in the armed forces. The service was disbanded in 1949, merging into the Women's Royal Army Corps.
