Boule (Council of Citizens)

The Boule, or Council of Citizens, was a key part of Athenian democracy in ancient Greece. Composed of 500 citizens chosen by lot, it prepared the agenda for the Assembly, where all eligible citizens could vote on laws and policies. Each citizen served for a limited term, ensuring diverse participation. The Boule oversaw government administration, managed finances, and could propose decrees. This system aimed to involve ordinary citizens in political decision-making, reflecting the democratic value of collective governance and active citizenship in Athens.
