Blood and Marrow Transplantation (BMT)
Blood and Marrow Transplantation (BMT) is a medical procedure used to treat certain diseases, primarily cancers like leukemia and lymphoma. It involves replacing damaged or unhealthy bone marrow—where blood cells are produced—with healthy stem cells. These stem cells can come from the patient (autologous transplant) or a donor (allogeneic transplant). The process includes administering high doses of chemotherapy or radiation to eliminate diseased cells before introducing the healthy stem cells. Once infused, the new cells can grow and restore healthy blood cell production, improving the patient’s immunity and overall health.
