Berlin Airlift

The Berlin Airlift (1948-1949) was a major event during the early Cold War. After World War II, Berlin was divided into East and West. In 1948, the Soviet Union blocked all ground access to West Berlin in an attempt to force the Allies out. To support the citizens of West Berlin, the United States and its allies organized a massive airlift, delivering food, fuel, and other supplies. Over nearly a year, planes flew in millions of tons of goods, demonstrating commitment to the city's residents and ultimately leading to the blockade's end and the division of Germany solidifying.
