Barber-surgeons
Barber-surgeons were historical practitioners in medieval Europe who combined the roles of barbers and surgeons. They performed haircuts and shaves, but also carried out medical procedures such as bloodletting, tooth extraction, and even surgical operations. The red and white pole outside modern barbershops originates from this profession, symbolizing the blood and bandages used in their work. Barber-surgeons were often seen as low-level medical practitioners, operating between skilled barbers and trained physicians, until the rise of modern surgical practices in the 19th century eventually led to their decline.
