Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, often referred to as Bangabandhu (meaning "Friend of Bengal"), was the founding leader of Bangladesh, emerging as a key figure in its struggle for independence from Pakistan. Born on March 17, 1920, in what is now Bangladesh, he played a crucial role in advocating for the rights of Bengalis. His historic speech on March 7, 1971, galvanized the population to demand autonomy. Following a brutal liberation war, Bangladesh gained independence in December 1971, and he became its first Prime Minister and later its President.
