Bandeirantes

Bandeirantes were Portuguese explorers and adventurers in Brazil during the 17th and 18th centuries. They set out from settlements in São Paulo to explore and expand territory into the interior of Brazil. Their main objectives included capturing indigenous peoples for labor, searching for gold and other resources, and extending Portuguese claims over land. While they played a significant role in the expansion of Brazil, their actions often led to violence against native populations and had lasting social and cultural impacts. The term "Bandeirantes" derives from "bandeira," meaning "flag," symbolizing their role in claiming new territories.
