Axes of Rotation

Axes of rotation are imaginary lines around which an object spins or rotates, much like an axle on a wheel. These lines can run in different directions—vertically, horizontally, or diagonally—determining how an object turns. For example, a spinning top rotates around its vertical axis, while a bowler's arm swings around a horizontal axis. Understanding these axes helps explain how objects move and balance in space, whether it's a planet rotating on its axis or a gymnast performing flips. They provide a framework for describing and analyzing rotational motion in a clear, systematic way.
